    Pre-College Summer Studio

    June 29–August 1, 2008

Individuals who have completed at least their sophomore year in high school are welcome to apply to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s (SMFA) rigorous five-week Pre-College Summer Studio.

    Unique Interdisciplinary Curriculum

At the SMFA we recognize that disciplines converge and influence each other, and that contemporary art is truly interdisciplinary. We encourage all students to build solid foundations and acquire skill sets in numerous disciplines in order to create new possibilities and forms of artmaking.

In the Pre-College Summer Studio you will explore painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, video, digital photography, and sound art, as well as installation, sculpture, and performance, so that you may take your artmaking to the next level. These core courses will encompass basic skills, experimentation, conceptual thinking, problem solving, critique, and discussions. The program will also include presentations, resources, and one-on-one guidance in regard to portfolio building, career paths in the arts, and the college application process.

    Individual-Focused Instruction

Highly skilled and experienced artists/teachers will instruct you in studio work and lead you in discussions about the artmaking process. Our unusually low student to faculty ratio (6:1) ensures that you will get the attention you need as you evolve your artwork. You will also be matched with a graduate student in the Master of Fine Arts program who will help you further develop your individual vision.

    Boston: The Extended Classroom

Visits from renowned artists and excursions in the Boston area will provide opportunities for direct engagement with the local art and culture scene. You also will have access to the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

    How to Apply

The Pre-College Summer Studio is a competitive pre-college program for juniors and seniors in high school (or students sixteen to eighteen years of age). We strongly encourage early application because of the program’s limited space. Students requesting housing are encouraged to submit applications before April 2, 2008. Preference is given to applications received prior to this date. All applicants must submit the following:

    • Application form and nonrefundable $50 application fee.

    • One letter of recommendation from an art teacher or guidance counselor. Applicants from outside the United States need to have a letter of recommendation in English. Letters of recommendation should be sent directly to the Continuing Education Office.

    • A typewritten essay (two to three pages) on one of the following topics: 1) Why do you want to attend the SMFA’s Pre-College Summer Studio program? Tell us what inspires you to make art. OR 2) Describe one of your pieces of art: Why did you create it; what does it mean to you?

    • A minimum of eight images of your artwork. Acceptable formats include slides, photographs, DVDs, CD-ROMs, and VHS (NTSC format only). Please label all materials with your name and title of work. Images should represent work done within the last year. No original work, please. Images will not be returned unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope is included.

Applicants will be admitted on the basis of their recommendation, essay, and artwork. Applications received after the program is filled will be placed on a waiting list, and applicants will be notified by telephone of their status.
